Paris Agreement

This is a short post, for I do not have all the facts and figures to support anything right now I only wish to share my dismay.

On Thursday (June 1st) my (unfortunate) president decided that the United States would pull out of the Paris Agreement. If you are unaware of what that is, here is a useful link to give you an overview of it. Basically, though, it’s an agreement between countries to lower carbon emissions to under 2°C. It is a commitment to lower the effects of climate change and to do so in a timely fashion.  Who would purposefully pull out of such an agreement when there is science, undeniable science, to prove that Climate Change is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, threats to the world right now? I did not think he would stay in the game but I had a small sliver of hope that he would surprise us all. He did not.

This, while horrible, is not the end of the line for the United States in regards to the Agreement. In an NPR segment, it was said that “It’s written into the agreement that a country can withdraw. It takes three years. They have to wait three years. And then once they submit that requests for a withdrawal, it takes another year. So actually, it turns out, if you do the numbers, November 4, 2020 is when the U.S. could formally be out, which is right after the election” (NPR) There have also been mayors and cities across the nation vowing to uphold the terms of the agreement in spite of the current administration.

I and so many others will continue to educate and fight for what we know is true and right. You do not have to picket or put yourself in harm’s way to be a part of the movement, simply educating people around you on what is happening and how they can help is a good start!
